Lisbon will host the first European Universities Athletics Championships in 2027

The first-ever edition of the EUSA European Universities Athletics Championships will take place in Lisbon, Portugal in 2027: the event has been attributed during the last EUSA Executive Committee Meeting held on June 2, 2025. The University of Lisbon will host the competition, with the local cooperation of Portugal University Sports Federation (FADU) and the support of the Portuguese Athletics Federation.

The bid submitted by FADU, and recenty discussed at EUSA headquarters, highlighted the Portuguese capital as a city with an “incredibly favourable and fertile environment for hosting international sporting events of all scales”, underlining the vast experience of the city and the institutions involved in organising high-level sporting competitions.
Lisbon's University Stadium, the event's central venue, was also highlighted as one of the bid's main assets, due to its “impressive facilities” and “distinguished record of success in organising major national and international sporting events”.

The choice of Lisbon was greeted with great enthusiasm by EUSA, with its President, Adam Roczek, highlighting the importance of this moment for the European panorama:
"It is with great excitement that we announce the first-ever EUSA European Universities Championship in Athletics, attributed to the University of Lisbon in cooperation with Portugal University Sports Federation. This historic event marks a new chapter for university sport in Europe. Athletics, one of the most celebrated university sports, symbolises the strength, dedication, and unity we celebrate in our student-athletes community. We look forward to an unforgettable first edition that will pave the way for many more to come."

“This is a historic moment for European and national university sport” said FADU President, Ricardo Nora, "This is a sport with enormous weight and history on the national and international scene. Bringing the first edition of the European University Athletics Championships to Portugal is a reflection of the confidence that EUSA has in our country's organisational capacity and in the strength of the network of partners that has united around this bid. We are deeply proud of this achievement. In 2027, we are going to write a new page in the history of European university sport, with Portugal at the centre of the track", he emphasised.

University of Lisbon Rector, Luis Ferreira, was also delighted to be awarded the event: "It is an honour for the University of Lisbon to host the first EUSA European University Athletics Championships. It's proof that sport is also at the heart of the University - where the cognitive and physical components come together with the constant desire to excel".
The Portuguese capital's academic institution recently hosted a meeting, where Rector Ferreira personally met with EUSA and FADU representatives, to prepare this inaugural edition of the event.

The first-ever EUC Athletics adds to the already extensive and exciting list of EUSA Championships scheduled for 2027.
