The International University Sports Federation (FISU) concluded the year 2018 with a season of World University Championships, and together with the local hosts the countdown to the 2019 Universiades season has begun.

The Siberian City of Krasnoyarsk in Russia will host the 29th Winter Universiade March 2-12, 2019. The event will offer 11 winter sports: Alpine Skiing, Bandy, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Short Track Speed Skating, Ski Orienteering and Snowboard. During the Universiade, FISU World Conference on Innovation-Education-Sport will also be organised, as well as cultural projects and programmes.

“If the weather is anything like what it was during the Cross-Country Skiing Russian Cup, they will have an authentic experience,” said the Olympic Games silver medallist Alexander Panzhinskiy, referring to the recent test event where he won gold. “But the warmth and hospitality of the locals will warm the participants of the Winter Universiade 2019 after the races.”



After the Real Winter Experience, the 30th Summer Universiade will be held between July 3 and 14 in Naples and the Campania Region in Italy. 234 events will be organised in 18 sports: Archery, Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Basketball, Diving, Fencing, Football, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Sailing, Shooting Sport, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball and Water Polo. The event will bring Sport, Culture and Emotions together in a great event.

On December 15, in the city’s historic central train station, sports practitioners, local residents, and television celebrities celebrated the 200 day countdown to Summer Universiade 2019. Details for television coverage of the event are also being finalised and the organisers will soon start implementing the promotion and communications plan on a global level.



After 2019, the FISU biannual Universiades cycle will continue in 2021 with the Lucerne Winter Universiade and Chengdu Summer Universiade. FISU was founded in 1949, and the first World University Games - the Universiade was held in 1959, so next year marks the 70th anniversary of the organisation and the 60th anniversary of the Universiades. Moreover, FISU has foundations also in the International Confederation of Students which was established in 1919, commemorating its 100th anniversary in 2019.
