University sport is a long term investment

Every year hundreds of Universities send their teams to European Universities Games or Championships and all of them hope for the best. But, when the season finishes and we draw the line only one can be the best. Well, last season we had two Universities with the same score and today we present you University of Bordeaux.

In 2017 they send around 52 athletes on different European Universities Championships and they had a lot of success. Most notable is the success of their female tennis team who won the gold, a they volleyball, badminton, football, judo, table tennis and basketball 3x3 athletes and teams were competing. In women's tennis, we were European champions. Jean-Charles Astier, director of SUAPS Bordeaux (University Service Of Physical And Sports Activities) said they were surprised when they heard the news.

"Even though we had already finished 5th and 7th in the past we were really surprised. Honestly we did not expect it. We are very happy to receive this award, which rewards all our hard work, and especially all the people who helped to obtain it. I am talking here about teachers, all institutions of higher education, partnerships (CREPS, regional clubs, federal leagues ...), the LNASU Bordeaux (Ligue Nouvelle-Aquitaine du Sport Universitaire) and of course students, without whom all this would not have been possible. ASU Bordeaux is very young (created in 2009), and it is already rewarded, we are very proud!"

They say that the main reason is that they invest a lot in improving the facilites and try to be close with student athletes.

"I think the main reason is the closeness we have with students. Since the creation of ASU BX in 2009, we have implemented a policy to support top athletes. This policy has grown every year, and it has gained notoriety. There are many students from other cities who come to Bordeaux to take advantage of this program.

In 2014, following the fusion of the universities of Bordeaux, we set up the PHASE service (Public Disabled, Artists, Athletes, Students). It is for students with special needs that require an adaptation of their education by offering personalized support to help achieve their academic and professional project. The arrangements put in place allow students to concile lessons at the university of Bordeaux and intense extra-university activity, such as sport.

I will also add the renovation of campus sports facilities. We have injected 40 million euros into the facilities since 2011. With this money, we have been able to renovate many infrastructures, like the Monadey plain (synthetic football pitches). At this time, the university swimming pool is in full revival, and works at the Sports Hall will begin soon. This inevitably attracts students and promotes the development of high-level sport."

We are really happy to see University of Bordeaux teams again at European Universities Games in Coimbra and try to win the title second year in a row.
