UniSport Austria celebrates 175 years of university sports

On the occasion of its 175th anniversary, Unisport Austria looks back at its vibrant university sports community, where students come together, and athletic excellence thrives.

In the dynamic landscape of Austrian university sports, Unisport Austria stands as a beacon of excellence. With a proud history of athletic competition and the promotion of physical fitness and health, university sports have inspired and shaped numerous generations of students.

Celebrating 175 years of UniSport Austria, the University of Vienna hosted a solemn ceremony in the great hall where Unisport Austria Acting President Ms Hemma Angerer presents the anniversary publication.

The Federal Minister of Education, Science, and Research Mr Martin Polaschek and the Rector of the University of Vienna Mr Sebastian Schütze give ceremonial speeches.

Students designed and performed the musical and sports impressive program in historical halls. All university sports institutes were guests. On this occasion, the commemorative publication “175 Years of University Sport in Austria” was also introduced and presented.

Unisport Austria took this opportunity to launch appropriate activites during this year. For example, a workshop on university sports was held to take a closer look at the current situation and possible developments for university sport in Austria. Experts from the various institutions met to discuss the current challenges and opportunities for university sports. The workshop focused on topics such as development opportunities within university sports institutes, as well as selection criteria for international competitions, and the structure and communication between the individual players in university sports. The hosting of national Unisport Austria championships, the compatibility of studies & competitive sports, university health programs and eSports also were discussed.

From the historic University of Vienna to the scenic University of Graz and the University of Innsbruck, located amidst the mountains, to the University of Salzburg, each institute offers a rich array of sports experiences. The institutes of Leoben, Linz, Klagenfurt, and newly added at University for Continuing Education Krems contribute to Unisport Austria's vibrant sports ecosystem.

The University Sports Institutes are part of the biggest university at every university location in Austria, and provide courses and competitions for all students and employees in the postsecondary education sector.

With over 1,300 course instructors per semester, the university sports institutes are among the largest employers in sports. They offer 5,675 courses per academic year throughout Austria. Regional and local academic championships are held in 36 sports with around 10,200 participants across Austria.

Unisport Austria is proud to organize and support a variety of national and international competitions to provide a platform for students to demonstrate their sporting skills. In the field of national competitive sports, Unisport Austria organizes 8-10 national championships with over 900 participants every year.

Best wishes and congratulation to Austrian University Sport!
