After the finish of the group stages it is time for the knockout and the real fun has begun. We already saw two champions from last year saying goodbye and will not defend titles won at the last years European Universities Championship. On the other side, three champions from last year are still fighting for the title.

The biggest upset so far is the loss of Kuban State University (RUS) men football team that will go home without a medal first time since 2013. For that they can „blame“ the team from University of Split and their player Antonio Pavlinovic who scored two goals to defeat the reigning champions.

In women competition University of Montpellier (FRA) is going for their third consecutive gold medal on EUSA competitions, because they returned home the gold from the European Universities Championship last year and from last edition of European Universities Games held in Zagreb and Rijeka. Team consisted mostly from the team of Herault Montpellier, third team from the last seasons French Women Football league.

Futsal proves the quality that we all expected and it is really fun and exciting to watch the competition held in four halls in Coimbra. The biggest news from today is that the king is dead, because University of Coimbra smashed the last years champions from Beira Interior 5:1. All home fans could be happy with the display from University of Coimbra and they hope for the Portuguese final, because University of Minho is their other representative in the semi-finals.

Moscow Polytechnical University (RUS) looks good on their way to defend the title won last year in Corum, Turkey. Today, they were better than the 2013 and 2015 champions from University of Rouen (FRA) and won 2:0. If they manage to strike a gold it would be third consecutive vitctory for Universities based in Russia.

Basketball competition is the only competition where both last years champions are still fighting for the gold medal because both University of Bologna (ITA) in men´s and University of Strasbourg (FRA) in women´s competition are still going for the gold.

The only thing we can see that will certainly happen from women´s basketball competition is that the Universities from France will go home with at least one medal, because University of Strasbourg play against University of Toulouse II - Jean Jaures in the semi-final. And it seems that it will be a strong match between the team who know each other well.

University of Bologna had a tough time against University of Nis who missed a shot to eliminate current champions from the further competition. Tomorrow they play against Lomonosov Univerisity (RUS) and hopefully we will see them in the final against Beykent University, which is, by names, the best team in the competition. But that doesn´t mean much in University sport.

Rugby 7s brought us the privilege to see the women team of University of Rennes 2 (FRA) and their amazing play. How amazing they are can be best described with the fact that they still didn´t receive a single point. Their male colleagues lost against University of Parma and have their first defeat so far. It seems that these two team will be the biggest contenders for the gold medal tomorrow.
