Swiss student stars decorated in Lucerne

In cooperation with the Organising Committee of the Winter Universiade 2021, Swiss University Sports hosted the glittering 2018/19 Swiss Students Sports Awards ceremony for the first time at the LUGA fair in Lucerne.

Some 130 athletes and officials, supporters, guests and delegates from academic, political and sports authorities were treated to a spectacular show, presented and moderated by TV moderator and entertainer Beat Antenen.

In his address, President of Swiss University Sports Mike Kurt underlined the importance of dual career, a process which still has to be further developed at Swiss Universities. Daniel Studer, responsible for EUSA events in Swiss University Sports, presented awards to Lausanne University’s female Volleyball team, winner of the EUG 2018 in Coimbra, and to Badminton duo Thomas Heiniger and Florian Schmid, silver medalists in the men’s double competition in Coimbra.

Among the 12 medal winners at different World University Championships in 2018, Marilen Matter Graf, Head of Elite Sports, had the honour of presenting the Swiss Students Sports Award 2018 to Jonas Egger. Egger won two golds and one bronze medal at the WUC Orienteering in Finland. Additional medal winners came from Floorball, Beach Volleyball, Rowing and Weightlifting.

Head of the Swiss delegation at the Winter Universiade 2019 in Krasnojarsk, Christoph Böcklin, presented the final award of the evening to Amélie Dupasquier, double silver medal winner in Alpine Skiing.

The night’s proceedings continued with show dance performances under the leadership of Karin Udvardi from Lucerne University Sports, while the song “Mittendrin” sung by Paul Etterlin demonstrated the unity between sport, education and culture.

In closing, Beat Antenen interviewed Urs Hunkeler, Managing Director of the Winter Universiade 2021, about the way forward from Krasnojarsk 2019 to Lucerne 2021, before a video was screened which gave a complete overview about the success of Swiss Student Athletes at the EUG 2018 in Coimbra, the different WUC 2018 championships as well as clips from the Winter Universiade 2019 in Krasnojarsk.

The ceremony at Lucerne Fair LUGA was a strong demonstration of the close links between Swiss University Sports and the Organising Committee of the Winter Universiade 2021 in Lucerne, Central Switzerland.
