Student Sport Ireland elects new President

Student Sport Ireland has a new leader following the election of Mr Matthew Dossett as the association’s new President.

Mr Dossett, Deputy Head of Sport in Trinity College Dublin, takes over from Ms Carmel Lynch who had served in the role from 2019, having previously held the position of Honorary Chairperson from 2014.

Having previously served the SSI on the high-performance committee, and more recently as Finance and Governance committee chairperson, Mr Dossett has been involved in the sports industry for two decades, holding various positions in sports development, management, and leadership predominantly in university sport across the UK and Ireland. A former ski racer and coach, he holds a BSc in Sports Science, as well as an MSc in Sports Management, and in his current position at Trinity College Dublin he oversees the advancement and delivery of the strategy for sport, infrastructure projects, partnerships, as well as key stakeholder relationships.

Mr Dossett says he is looking forward to his tenure as the SSI’s new President.

“I would like to thank the board for their support,” he said. “I am really looking forward to working with all our members and stakeholders in implementing our new strategy and helping us steer through the challenges and opportunities ahead. I am a strong believer in the importance and unique impact of student sport, it creates life-long habits and connections, and is a fundamental bridge within an important phase of our lives that a huge number of young people across the membership experience each year. As we emerge from the current global crisis, sport and physical will be more important than ever in providing both inspiration and engagement, as well enabling a growing active and healthy population.”

UCD PhD student Ms Catherine Mahony was re-elected as the SSI’s Vice President, while TU Dublin’s Ms Niamh O’Callaghan and Queen’s University Mr Belfast Karl Oakes have both joined the board as directors.
