Review of the 35th SELL Games

The Lithuanian city of Kaunas hosted the XXXV SELL Student Games between May 17 and 19, 2019. The event attracted more than 1300 participants from 48 universities and 7 countries, most from Europe – Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland and some friends from other continent, namely China.

With the slogan One Game – One Heart, the Games were organized by the Lithuanian Students Sports Association (LSSA), under the patronage of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

The XXXV SELL Student Games were opened with a spectacular show at the Vytautas Magnus University ‘s Great Hall. The Opening Ceremony was attended by the LSSA President Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, representatives of national university sports bodies of the SELL countries (Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and also by other eminent guests including the EUSA President Mr Adam Roczek and Lithuanian Vice Minister of Education, Science and Sport Ms Kornelija Tiesnesyte.

Students competed in 13 different disciplines – Track and Field, Basketball, Rugby 7, Mini football, Volleyball, Swimming, Powerlifting, Table Tennis, Judo, Badminton, Orienteering, Wrestling (Greco-Roman) and Chess.

Athletics

The largest student delegation was the Lithuanian delegation. In total, 989 students from 15 universities participated. Second was the Latvian delegation, having 159 students from 11 universities. The largest university delegation was the Lithuanian Sports University (LSU) with 213 participants.

Table Tennis

The total medal tally of the 35th SELL Student Sport Games was dominated by the Lithuanian Sports University, which won 19 Gold medals, 19 Silver and 17 Bronze medals. The second spot was taken by the China University of Geosciences with 7 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals, while the third spot went to the Vilnius University 6 Gold, 7 Silver and 9 Bronze medals.

In 2020, the Games will be held in Lahti, Finland, from May 15 to 17, hosted by the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) and Lathi University of Applied Science.
