Empowered Nation - ENAcT

Empowered Nation - ENAcT was a 2-year project aimed at promoting gender equality in sports, launched in 2018. The project was led by the EUSA Institute (SLO), with project partners including the Portuguese University Sports Federation - FADU (POR), Uludag University (TUR), and Budapest University Athletics Club - BEAC (HUN). It was co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.

ENACT project focused on encouraging social inclusion and equal opportunities in sports, seeking a sustainable, long-term strategic plan to enforce gender equality. With a specific focus on university sports, the project worked closely with partner organizations possessing considerable knowledge of university sports. Each partner organization nominated two representatives with experience in gender equality in sports.

Gender equality and promotion of female participation

Gender equality and the promotion of female participation were key objectives of the project. Based on previously completed gender equality surveys conducted by EUSA members and national university sports bodies in 2011 and 2016, the project aimed to strengthen women's participation in university sports. EUSA aimed to raise awareness for equal opportunities and fight against youth unemployment.

The target groups of the project included decision-makers in sports, athletes, volunteers, sports officials, and event organizers.

The project goals were as follows:

  •  Search for long-term and sustainable strategic plans to enforce a gender-balanced sports society at all levels, starting with current EUSA athletes and volunteers.
  • Supporting women through non-formal education and engaging them in the European sports sector
  • Foster international cooparation and share good practices in university sports at different levels of sports organizations for gender-balanced leadership
  • Fighting against the lack of access and opportunities at higher levels in sports for women

EUSA invited all its members, partner federations, universities, sports clubs, sponsors, and university sports event Organizing Committees to join the movement for gender equality in university sports. The project emphasized the importance of creating gender statistics, empowering women to participate in different segments of sports, and promoting good governance by ensuring the participation of both genders in decision-making processes.
