Portuguese University Champs 2019 conclude in Guimaraes

The Portuguese National University Championships (CNU) 2019, which took place in the northern city of Guimarães, concluded last week, bringing to an end 11 days of fun-filled sporting action among some of the country’s strongest universities.

A total of 1 621 athletes, 366 officials and 29 referees participated in the Championships, which ran from April 28-May 10, which included eight different sporting codes, and together with organisers and media partners, close to 2 300 people were involved across the entire event.

Students from the host association, the University of Minho, stood out from the competition by winning five gold medals (in volleyball, roller hockey, futsal, soccer and handball), four silvers and one bronze, recording a total of 10 medals to their name.

Second in the ranking at this year’s CNU were the students from the University of Coimbra, who emerged victorious in women's rugby, men's basketball and men's futsal, while earning two bronze medals as well.

The Student Association from the University of Aveiro took home one gold medal, earned in the women's basketball event, and three bronze medals. Students from the Faculty of Economics of Porto didn’t go home empty-handed either and took home a gold medal, fruit of their labour as winners in the women’s volleyball competition, and a bronze medal as well.

The Student Association from Lisbon University Institute and the University of Porto each won one gold medal, earning first place in men's rugby and women's handball respectively, while students from the University of Évora took two silvers and a bronze medal back to Alentejo. The New University of Lisbon twice ended as runners-up as they brought two silvers back to the Portuguese capital while the Student Association from the University of Porto’s Engineering Faculty added a silver and bronze medal to their trophy cabinet.

Rounding off the podium finishers were the students from the Lusófona University of Humanities and Technologies, the Student Assocation from University of Porto’s Faculty of Sport and the Student Association from the Higher Technical Institute, who each won a silver medal. The Polytechnic Institute of Leiria and the Student Association from the Portuguese Institute of Marketing Administration of Porto both earned a bronze medal each.
