European Universities Football Championship 2017 concluded
The 12th European Universities Football Championship concluded on July 30 with exciting finals, followed by the awarding and closing ceremony at the Ramalde Stadium in Porto, Portugal.
Over 550 participants formed 27 European university teams from 13 countries taking part in this year’s edition of the event.
The event, which started on July 22, brought several extremely interesting matches played across five stadiums in the 15-team male and 12-team female tournament.
The 12th European Universities Football Championship was also the first time in EUSA events the Green Card was used, promoting and awarding Fair Play and good sportsmanship gestures on the field.
In men’s finals, the title of champions went to Kuban State University (RUS) who won a thrilling final match against the University of Lille (FRA), with University of Bordeaux (FRA) receiving bronze medal.
In women finals, the title of champions went to the team of University of Montpellier (FRA) who won an exciting final match against the University of Valencia (ESP). French medal tally was completed by the team of University Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier on third place.
In female competition, the best scorer award was given to Marie–Charlote Leger representing the University of Montpellier (FRA), best player to Veronika Capoccia from Technical University of Munich (GER), best goalkeeper to Noemie Cuberes from University of Montpellier (FRA) and the fair play award was given to the Norwegian School of Economics (NOR) and University of Innsbruck (AUT).
In male competition, the best scorer award was given to Bastien Palengat from University of Bordeaux (FRA), best player to Francisco Gomes from University of Almeria (ESP), best goalkeeper to Ulric Cremers from University of Lille (FRA) and the fair play award was given to University of Lille (FRA).
Medals and awards were presented by the President of the Organizing Committee Ana Luísa Pereira, Secretary General of the Organising Committee Mr Nuno Loureiro, President of the Portuguese University Sports Federation Mr Daniel Monteiro, Rector of University of Porto Mr Sebastiao Feyo de Azevedo, EUSA Representative Mr Antonis Petrou, EUSA Technical delegate Mr Andreas Demetriou, EUSA Assistant technical delegate Ms Ourania Foskolou, and EUSA Sport Manager Mr Besim Aliti.
The competition was organized by the Oporto's Academic Federation (FAP), in conjunction with the Portuguese University Sports Academic Federation (FADU), under the guidance of the European University Sports Association (EUSA).
The next European Universities Football Championship will be held in will take place in 2019 in Madrid, Spain. Football fans do not have to wait so long for the sport to return on EUSA programme, though, as it will be also held next year at the European Universities Games 2018 in Coimbra. All teams are warmly welcomed to join the next EUSA Football events!
