1. What motivated you to volunteer for EUG2024?
I was motivated to volunteer for the European Universities Games 2024 because I have always had a passion for learning and being part of new experiences. Growing up in a rural area in South Africa, I had limited exposure to different sports. Volunteering at EUG2024 offered me a unique opportunity to broaden my horizons, learn more about sports, and contribute to a prestigious event that fosters university sports and youth development.
2. What does volunteering (at sports events) mean to you?
Volunteering at sports events is a way for me to give back to the community while also developing myself personally and professionally. It means being part of something bigger than myself, helping others, and being exposed to new experiences. For me, it’s about seeing the impact sports can have on young people, especially in encouraging discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

3. What are your favorite highlights of the work that you did during the Games?
One of my favorite highlights was being part of the EUSA Media and Communications team. I had the chance to see how various sports events were organized and how the media plays a huge role in promoting them. It was inspiring to witness the dedication and commitment of athletes. I also loved connecting with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and learning from their experiences.
4. Are there any skills that you have picked up during your volunteering time?
I’ve gained a variety of skills, particularly in communication and media production. I learned about the role of media in sports events, how to engage audiences, and how to use storytelling to create excitement around events. Additionally, I developed a better understanding of teamwork, time management, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.

5. Is this your first time volunteering at such a big event? If not, how does the volunteering experience at EUG2024 differ from others that you have had in the past?
Yes, this is my first time volunteering at such a large-scale international sports event. The experience at EUG2024 was unique because of the level of professionalism and organization involved. I had the chance to work alongside people from all over Europe and beyond, which opened my eyes to different cultures and work approaches. This exposure was invaluable compared to previous volunteer experiences I’ve had.
6. What was your favorite part of working as an EUSA volunteer?
My favorite part was learning about the variety of sports available to university students. Coming from a rural background, I was not exposed to many sports growing up, so seeing young people embrace so many different disciplines with discipline and courage was truly inspiring. It was humbling to witness athletes pushing beyond their comfort zones to achieve greatness.

7. Can you tell us how events like the European Universities Games are helping volunteers and athletes in their personal and professional growth?
Events like EUG2024 provide both volunteers and athletes with a platform to develop new skills, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and gain invaluable experiences. For volunteers, like myself, it’s an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment and enhance our professional portfolios, while athletes get the chance to compete at a high level, showcasing their discipline and determination. Both experiences contribute significantly to personal growth.
8. What is your message to future volunteers?
To future volunteers, I would say: embrace the opportunity, be open to learning, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Volunteering at such events will challenge you in ways you never expected, but it will also help you grow in incredible ways—professionally and personally. It’s a chance to make a difference while learning from some of the best.

9. Why is volunteering important for people and for you?
Volunteering is important because it offers a chance to give back to the community, learn from others, and develop skills that may not be taught in a classroom. For me, it’s been an opportunity to step outside my rural upbringing and experience the world of sports on a global scale. It has been transformative in shaping my perspective and ambitions.
