Firstly, for those who do not know, please tell us a bit about your NUSA ...
The Association for University Sport “Akademik” (AUSA) is the Bulgarian national federation for university sport, established in 1993. Bulgaria was the host of two Summer (1961, 1977) and two Winter (1983, 1989) Universiades. AUSA is the responsible organisation for the national university sport events and member of FISU and EUSA, where over 4000 students take part.

Can you describe some of the major events your NUSA has hosted in recent years, both national and international?
Annually the federation organizes 26 National championships, National Winter and Summer University Games and National Universiades.

What have been some of the highlights for your NUSA in recent years?
Our highlights are devoted to promoting physical activity among young people and to give them the opportunity to demonstrate their sport skills in different activities by organising various National University Championships and to allow the best athletes to participate in international university competitions.

“We are devoted to promoting physical activity among young people and to give them the opportunity to demonstrate their sport skills in different activities.”

How important are the EUSA events – both sporting and educational – for your NUSA?
The EUSA’s events are major events in our international calendar, especially the European Universities Games.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted university sport across the world. How was your NUSA able to adapt to the situation, what activities have you still managed to organise and are there any positives you have noted from these difficult circumstances?
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we have postponed almost every competition in our national calendar. Despite this, we managed to organise and conduct the National University Football Championships in June and July, as well as the Summer University Sport Games and the National University Orienteering Championships in September before starting the postponed Spring championships. The federation reorganises its work according to the academic year.

Finally, what does the future of university sport in your country hold?
We are looking on the bright side of the situation and hoping that we will be able to give the young people the same emotions during the university championships in the future.

EUSA wishes the Association for University Sport "Akademik" well for all their future endeavours, and looks forward to seeing their NUSA members and student-athletes at many of our events in future!
