Lithuanian students athletes Gala 2018

Lithuanian Students’ Sports Association (LSSA) ended this sport year celebrating the Centennial of the restored State of Lithuania and its 25th anniversary of FISU membership, as well as 25 years after the first medals were won in the Universiade by Lithuania as an independent country.

The annual Student sport award gala was organized to honour and award the best Lithuanian students sportsmen of the year 2018 was held in the Gothic Hall of Vilnius Academy of Arts on December 14.

Cultural programme

The best Lithuanian students-sportsmen and sportswomen were awarded and their achievements made their universities and Lithuania known in the international sport arenas, in the presence of guests like Mr Kestutis Smirnovas, President of the Commission of Youth and Sport Affairs under the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr Tomas Daukantas, Chancellor of the Ministry of Education and Science, Ms Daina Gudzineviciute, President of the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania, Ms Kornelija Tiesnesyte, Senior Adviser of the Department of Physical Education and Sport, and many others.

LSSA President Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas stressed that this year LSSA celebrated the 25th anniversary of official entrance of Lithuania into FISU. FISU President Mr Oleg Matytsin sent his congratulating video noting the significant contribution of the Lithuanian students into the global movement of university sport. The Lithuanian students have won 54 medals (22 gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze) in the world universiades in these 25 years.

Several awards were attributed

The world rowing champions Milda Valciukaite and Ieva Adomaviciute were recognized as the best athletes of the year 2018. The best teams were recognized to be 3x3 basketball players of Vytautas Magnus University, who won gold at the European Universities Games and bronze at the FISU 3x3 league, and the Lithuanian students-rowers (M4x), as the world champions 2018.  Several other students, who have won medals in world and European championships, and other key people in university sport, were also recognised and awarded.
