International Students’ Day 2018

International Students’ Day 2018

Today marks the International Students’ Day, observed annually on November 17. The initiators - Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions (OBESSU) and the European Students’ Union (ESU) this year focus on the supportive and preventive education environments which affect the mental health and general well-being of students.

The Call for action aims for students to be guaranteed a healthy environment in order to fully access education. In particular:
- mental health education to be part of national curricula,
- free and high-quality psychological and mentoring support,
- medical checkups for all students,
- full recognition of ill mental health as a factor impacting on school and higher education performance,
- student-centred learning and
- inclusion for all students, regardless of their background.

European University Sports Association (EUSA) supports the initiative as well, and emphasises that sport and recreation play an important role in the education process, also for the physical and mental health of the students.

The date of 17th November was chosen to be the International Students’ Day due to the events that unfolded in Prague during World War II. Nine students were executed without trail in concentration camps on the 17th November 1939. Nowadays, November 17 marks a celebration of multiculturalism of international students.
