Hungary organises international running race online

The 38th edition of the 5vös5km running race, organised by Eotvos Lorand University (ELTE), with the support of the Hungarian University Sports Federation (HUSF), will be held between June 19-24, while taking on a different format this year.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the popular biannual 5-kilometer race will now take place on a virtual track which can be completed online from anywhere in the world for 5 days, 5 hours and 5 minutes.

Twenty years ago, on the initiative of physicist Akos Horvath, associate professor of the Department of Atomic Physics at Eotvos Lorand University, this special running competition named after Lorand Eotvs was organised for the first time. Held every six months on the university campus, the competition aims to mobilise university citizens as well as those living and working in the area, making it an accessible challenge for both beginners and regular runners, as well as a celebration of running together.

True to tradition, the 5vös5km running race would have started on the 5th of May at 5.05 in the afternoon, at which almost six hundred people started last autumn's sporting event, which was the opening event of the 2019 International Day of University Sport. With measures related to the Coronavirus epidemic restricting the popular running race from being organised in its regular format, organisers have launched an individually feasible, online race to replace the missed sports experience. To participate in the online competition - by its nature - 5 days, 5 hours and 5 minutes are available. Outdoor runners can record their runs with a GPS device, which can be used to verify performance, but exceptionally, the race can also be performed in a room or on a treadmill.

At the end of the run, the results can be submitted together with the entry, attaching an image (photograph of the treadmill display, sports watch or screenshot of the phone application), which includes the distance run (meters), run time (minutes, seconds) and the arrival time. (day, hour, minute). At the end of the 5 day, 5 hour and 5 minute competition, the organizers will aggregate the data and thus the result list will be created.

The organisers expect many foreign university citizens and national university sports associations to join the online all-university running competition, along with numerous local Hungarian students.
