FUSION project concludes its 2-year mission
European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the EUSA Institute are proud to announce the formal completion of the two-year Erasmus+ small-scale partnership project FUSION (Future links for University athletes with Sports clubs Integrating Organised Networks). The project, co-funded by the European Union, ran from the start of October 2024 to end of September 2026. As project coordinator, EUSA guided a strong transnational consortium dedicated to tackling one of the most persistent hurdles in grassroots sport: the sharp drop in sports participation when student-athletes leave the university environment to enter the professional workforce.
Working alongside the Latvian University Sports Federation - LUSF (Latvia), the Lithuanian Students' Sports Association - LSSA (Lithuania), the University of Hamburg (Germany) and Toulouse University Sports Club - TUC (France), the project embraced the motto "Thinking beyond university sport" to construct sustainable bridges between campus sports infrastructure and community sports networks.

The project kicked off in December 2024 at the University of Ljubljana Rectorate in Slovenia, setting the framework for a comprehensive research study administered in five European languages. Led by researchers at the University of Hamburg and the EUSA Institute, the survey revealed that although 97% of respondents consider sport fundamental to their well-being and 80% express a desire to be more active, the cessation of student status often removes their primary sports framework. Combined university and employer sports participation plummets to barely 12% among alumni, leaving many struggling against time constraints and a lack of organized guidance.
To offer concrete remedies, the consortium organized four distinct local pilot initiatives:
- In Kaunas, Lithuania, LSSA organized a multi-generational festival bringing together high schoolers, university undergraduates, and graduates in active teambuilding sports.
- In Hamburg, Germany, the University Sports Center gathered ten mixed teams of students, staff, and young professionals for a volleyball competition and qualitative exchange.
- In Toulouse, France, TUC hosted a field hockey tournament and interactive club networking day demonstrating post-graduate club options.
- In Riga, Latvia, LUSF linked the project with the 41st SELL Student Games, hosting sports and also educational activities, including sessions to capture athlete interviews during the international university competitions.
For EUSA, the outcomes of FUSION provide a critical extension to our established commitments in dual career, social responsibility, and health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA). While traditional dual-career frameworks focus on balancing competitive sport with academic studies, FUSION expands this perspective to the next transition - ensuring that the athletic competence, mental resilience, and healthy lifestyle built during higher education are not abandoned when professional career demands begin.
The project's key outputs - including the multilingual survey instruments and research analysis, the FUSION podcast and recommendations - are available for the entire European university sports community on the project website at https://fusion.eusa.eu.
