FISU and IOC explore shared goals for University Sport
University sport plays an important role in connecting education, sporting excellence and the values of the Olympic Movement.
Through international cooperation, organisations support student-athletes in balancing their academic and sporting careers. The International University Sports Federation (FISU), recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1961, remains an important part of the international sports community, promoting the development of university sport worldwide.
Recent exchanges between FISU leadership and IOC President Kirsty Coventry at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne highlighted shared interests in the future of sport, including athlete development, the role of universities and the importance of supporting student-athletes throughout their sporting and academic journeys.

A key priority for university sport is promoting dual careers and ensuring student-athletes can balance education with sporting ambitions. Through competitions, educational initiatives and international cooperation, university sport encourages the exchange of knowledge and promotes fair play, inclusion and mutual respect.
At the European level, the European University Sports Association (EUSA) has a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Olympic Committees (EOC), strengthening cooperation between university sport and the wider European sports community. These partnerships support the continued development of a more inclusive and athlete-centred sporting environment.
FISU’s longstanding relationship with the IOC underlines the significance of university sport as an integral part of the international sports community, supporting the development of future generations of athletes while maintaining a strong connection between education and sport.
