FISU America Games conclude in Merida

The continental university sport event in the Americas – the FISU America Games – were held in Merida, Mexico between October 15 and 25, featuring over 1000 participants from 12 countries, competing in 11 sports.

The Opening ceremony was held on October 15, featuring Mayan artists and the parade of participating nations. The participants were welcomed by the FISU Acting President Mr Leonz Eder, and FISU America President Alim Maluf Nieto.

Opening of the Games

Following the Opening Ceremony, competitions were held in individual and team sports - archery, athletics, basketball, chess, football, futsal, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and weightlifting.

The event was organised by the National Council for Educational Sports of Mexico (CONDDE), the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY) and FISU America.

Volleyball

Mexico dominated the medal table winning 182 medals including 89 gold, 52 silver and 41 bronze. Brazilian students brough home 45 medals, 20 of which were gold; and the student athletes from the United States returned home with 66 medals, including 13 gold.

Merida was a wonderful host, welcoming athletes to the FISU America Games and equipping them with great memories from the Yucatan region of Mexico.
