FISU 3x3 World University League Finals 2018 starts

The fourth edition of the FISU 3x3 World University League Finals has kicked off today in Xiamen, China, lasting until November 18. Present at the Opening was also the President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Mr Oleg Matytsin, along with high continental and national representatives.

The 32 competing teams, 16 each in the men’s and women’s categories were chosen through the continental qualifiers that ran throughout the year all around the world, and wildcard special invitation system. European teams mainly qualified at the European Universities Games which were held in Coimbra, Portugal in July 2018.

The participating teams will play 3x3 basketball for three days, trying to conquer the title of the champion. The teams have been divided into 4 Pools of 4 teams each, and are play each other in round robin format in the first three days. The 4th and final day we will see the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, all taking place one after the other.

Male tournament

The teams representing Europe are Vytautas Magnus University (LTU), Georg August University Goettingen (GER) and Istanbul Arel University (TUR) for the male teams and University of Ljubljana (SLO), Vasyl Stefanyk University (UKR), VU University of Amsterdam (NED) and University of Physical Education (HUN) for the female teams.

Female tournament

The event also includes a shootout contest for women and a slam-dunk contest for men. The event will delight the basketball fans thanks to the great dynamism of this discipline, courtside entertainment and Huaqiao University’s cheer-leading squad who will keep the crowd on their feet, and online streaming of the event.

3x3 Basketball currently the largest urban team sport. The sport is promoted and governed by FIBA, and will be present in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, for both men and women.
