EUSA mourns the passing of Valentyn Havrylko

The European University Sports Association (EUSA) mourns the passing of Valentyn Havrylko, a pioneering figure in university sport who dedicated his life to student sport in Ukraine and internationally. He passed away at the age of 88.

A graduate of the Kyiv State Institute of Physical Culture, Havrylko was a Master of Sport in volleyball, competing for the premier league club “Locomotive” and the national volleyball team. His journey with the Sport Students’ Union of Ukraine (SSUU) began in 1968, leading to his election as President and later Secretary General.

For more than two decades, he played a pivotal role in developing opportunities for young athletes and strengthening Ukraine’s presence at major international competitions - including the World University Games and numerous European Universities Championships and Games, proudly supporting EUSA initiatives and participation.

His outstanding contribution to sport was recognised with prestigious national awards, including the title Honored Employee of Physical Culture and Sports of Ukraine”, the Work and Valor Medal, Excellence in Education Award, the Honorary Diploma of the Ukrainian Parliament, and the EUSA Order of Merit.

Valentyn Havrylko will be remembered for his leadership, encouragement of fair play, and commitment to building a strong and inclusive university sports community. His legacy continues through the programs, pathways, and international cooperation he helped establish. 

EUSA expresses its deepest condolences and support to Mr Havrylko’s family, friends, and the entire Ukrainian student sports community during these difficult days.
