EUSA mourns the loss of Mr Janez Kocijancic

It is with great sorrow that the European University Sports Association (EUSA) family mourns the death of partner, university sport advocate and friend, the European Olympic Committees President Mr Janez Kocijancic.

Mr Kocijancic’s contribution to sport is very vast. Beside his 15-year involvement with the European Olympic Committees, he also served on the board of the International Ski Federation. Slovenian-born Kocijancic was also a long-term President of the Slovenian Olympic Committee, and besides sport was also active in politics, business and law.

Interview for EUSA

He welcomed EUSA with open arms and a warm smile, and was always willing to share his vast experience and make time to talk about sport. His appreciation of university sport reaches back to his youth, when he presided the Student Union of the University of Ljubljana. Throughout his life he supported the main pillars of dual career – education and sport.

EUSA Secretary General Mr Pecovnik awarding Mr Kocijancic with the Order of Merit

EUSA is especially grateful to him for his personal engagement in signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Olympic Committees, and for the institutional and personal support of our activities. His great contribution to the university sport field was acknowledged just last year as he was awarded the prestigious EUSA Order of Merit award.

We send oud deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr Kocijancic’s family and loved ones, and to his colleagues at the Slovenian and European Olympic Committees.
