The European University Sports Association (EUSA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Panos Razis, a distinguished academic, scientist, sportsman and long-standing contributor to the university sports movement. 

He passed away at the age of 69. Born in Limassol in 1957, Prof. Razis built a distinguished academic and scientific career. He studied Physics at the University of Athens before completing his Master's and PhD studies at Yale University in the United States. His academic career spanned several decades of profound inquiry into the fundamental nature of the Universe. His scholarly pursuits began with rigorous foundational training at elite international institutions, fostering a deep expertise in the complex mechanics of cosmic evolution and high-energy interactions.

At the University of Cyprus, where he served as a professor of physics, he founded and led the Cyprus High-Energy Physics Group at CERN and contributed extensively to the development of scientific research and higher education in Cyprus.

Sport was another important part of Prof. Razis's life. He was a member of the national teams of Greece and Cyprus in athletics and volleyball and co-founded and became the first President of the University Sports Club (APOK). His commitment to the values of sport was also reflected in his service as Ambassador of Cyprus for Fair Play under the European Council.

His dedication to university sport led him to become actively involved in the Cyprus University Sports Federation, where he served as Vice-President and later as President. Through this work, he contributed to strengthening opportunities for students to participate in sport and to promoting the connection between education and sporting values.

Prof. Razis was also an important member of the European university sports family. In 2016, he was elected to the EUSA Executive Committee for the 2016-2020 term. During his mandate, he contributed to the work of the Association and took an active role in different EUSA events. Among these, he served as Competition Commission Chair for Basketball during the European Universities Games in Zagreb in 2016, for Volleyball during the European Universities Games in 2018 and represented EUSA at the European Universities Badminton Championship in Lodz in 2019.

For EUSA, Prof. Razis will be remembered not only for the positions he held, but also for the breadth of his commitment to university sport, education and the values of fair play. His life brought together science, higher education and sport, and his work contributed to each of these communities in Cyprus and beyond.

EUSA extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and to the entire university sports community in Cyprus. His passing is a loss to the European university sports family and to the many communities to which he dedicated his professional and personal life.
