EUSA-EKF partnership still going strong

The European Karate Federation (EKF) and the Sports Department of the European University Sports Association met virtually on Monday, November 23, as the two partner organisations discussed their respective activities.

EKF and EUSA have been official partners since 2017, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two organisations.

Monday’s meeting allowed both EUSA and EKF to inform each other on their activities as well as future plans, ensuring each organisation was updated on their partner’s events.

Present in the meeting on behalf of EUSA was Sports Manager Mr Besim Aliti, Assistant Sports Manager Mr Liam Smith and Sports Assistant Ms Lea Medvesek; CEO of World Karate Federation Ms Sara Wolff as well as EUSA’s Technical Delegate for Karate, Mr Davor Cipek.

Following introductions from both federations, EUSA’s upcoming programme was discussed, following which an update was given regarding the fifth edition of the European Universities Games taking place in Belgrade, Serbia in July next year, where Karate features as one of the 21 official sports on the programme.

The team competition format change at next year’s Games was discussed in more detail, with National University Sport Association teams now represented in the team events, and universities represented in the individual weight categories.

Karate has traditionally been one of the most popular sports on the EUSA calendar, with 446 participants from 172 universities taking part in last year’s European Universities Karate Championships, with a competitive field once again expected at the 2021 Games in Belgrade.
