EUSA attends safeguarding webinar

Safeguarding in sport is one of the key working areas for the European University Sports Association (EUSA). Education is key and is an ongoing process, so EUSA staff attended a safeguarding webinar on August 6.

The International Safeguards for Children in Sport webinar covered key information on existing good practices and highlighted what organisations need to put in place to create a safe sporting environment, address and prevent any forms of neglect, physical, psychological/emotional and sexual violence, harassment, abuse and maltreatment.

Why is safeguarding in sport important?

The hosts and speakers panel consisted by Ms Anne Tiivas, Chair of the International Safeguards for Children Advisory Group; Mr Aaron Smith, Young ambassador of the Commonwealth Games; Ms Liz Twyford, Sport Specialist at Unicef; Ms Elda Moreno, Head of Child Rights and Sport Values at the Council of Europe; Ms Kari Fasting, Professor Emerita at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and expert in safeguarding in sport.

Impact of sexual harassment in a sport setting

EUSA is currently revising its Code of Ethics and Incident Policy as well as takes part in consortium initiatives focusing on safeguarding in sport through its Institute. After participating in partnership projects Prevention of sexualized violence in Sports – Impulses for an open, secure and sound sporting environment in Europe and the Voices for truth and dignity – Combatting sexual violence in European Sport through the voices of those affected, we are currently taking part in the project HALT - Halting harassment and abuse in sports using learning technologies.
