European student athletes success at Milano Cortina Winter Olympics

The 2026 Winter Olympics came to an end on 22 February, when the eyes of the world turned to the iconic Verona Arena for an outstanding closing act.

Now, after the XXV Olympic Winter Games are concluded, it is time to sum up the results and especially congratulate all the European student-athletes who successfully competed at multiple sites across Lombardy and Northeast Italy.

Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross-Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Nordic Combined, Short Track, Snowboard and Speed Skating, European student-athletes excelled in almost every sport included in this edition of the Winter Olympics.

At the 2026 Milano‑Cortina Winter Olympics, athletes from 29 countries won medals, 20 of them European. Norway led the medal table with 41 medals, followed by Italy and Germany. European nations dominated overall, with strong performances from France, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, and the Netherlands, highlighting Europe’s continued strength in winter sports.

In addition to the top European medal-winning nations, several other European countries also earned medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Finland secured 6 medals, Czechia 5, Slovenia 4, Poland 4, and Spain 3. Smaller medal hauls came from Latvia with 2, Bulgaria with 2, and single medals for Denmark, Estonia, Georgia, and Belgium. These results further highlight the widespread success of European athletes across the Games.

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) reports that several athletes who previously competed at the Universiades / FISU Winter University Games performed magnificently at the Olympic Winter Games 2026.

Among all the successes, Czech university student Julie Zelingerova was nominated for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Games Fair Play Award. Julie Zelingrova demonstrated true fair play by self-reporting a nearly invisible rule violation (touching a running stone), choosing honesty over an easy advantage and embodying the core values of the Olympic movement.

EUSA would like to thank all the members for providing information and data regarding current university students and recent university graduates who greatly excelled in their sport in Milano Cortina 2026.

Below you can find a list of student-athletes from Europe who have especially excelled in Italy.
