EUC Rugby 7s 2025 starts in Ankara

The Opening Ceremony of the European Universities Rugby 7s Championship 2025 took place on July 21, 2025, in Ankara, Türkiye, at one of the most iconic places in the city, METU Devrim Stadium.
The Ceremony was attended by representatives of the highest authorities of the Middle East Technical University, I.D. Bilkent University, Turkish University Sports Federation, Turkish Rugby Federation, and several consulate members from participating teams’ countries.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, participants were welcomed by Radio METU commentator Sahra Topay. METU Rector Ahmet Yozgatligil and I.D. Bilkent University Rector Kursat Aydogan made the opening and welcoming speeches to all of the guests and participants.

EUSA Executive Committee Representative and event SCAC Chair Agita Abele welcomed all participants, and wished all the teams and participants who came to test their skills and abilities well ahead of the start of the competition, while also thanking the Organising Committee for all their contributions.

The competition is organised by the collaboration of I.D. Bilkent University and METU, with the contribution of the Turkish University Sports Federation, Turkish Rugby Federation and Rugby Europe.

The Championship will take place from 21 July to 24 July 2025 in Ankara. The venues of I.D. Bilkent University and METU will be used for the tournament, which features more than 220 athletes (10 men's teams and 5 women's teams) from 14 different universities from 6 different countries.
EUSA is represented by Ms Abele and Technical Delegate Maria Gloycsos. They will make sure that the event runs smoothly and without problems. Prior to the Opening Ceremony, on 21 July, the General Technical Meeting took place, hosting the draws for the men's and women's tournaments.

The title of European Universities Rugby 7s Champion is defended by the men's team of the University of La Rochelle and the women's team of the University of Rennes 2 from France.

Expectations are high as athletes from across Europe gather to compete at the highest level of university sport, showcasing not only their athleticism but also the spirit of fair play, friendship, and cultural exchange.

The venue was alive with energy, marked by music, dance, and vibrant delegations proudly waving their flags, creating a truly international and festive atmosphere. The parade of universities drew enthusiastic cheers from the audience as each university delegation entered with enthusiasm and excitement.

The ceremony featured a captivating performance by METU HIP-HOP Community, which reflected the cultural richness of the host city.

In line with EUSA’s commitment to sustainability, organisers implemented several eco-friendly initiatives, including digital information systems, reusable water stations, and waste separation zones across the competition venues.

The organisers hope the Championship will serve not only as a competitive platform but also as a legacy for future university sport in the region, inspiring young athletes and setting a benchmark for hosting international events.
