EUC 3x3 Basketball starts in Salerno

The Opening Ceremony of the European Universities 3x3 Basketball Championship 2025 took place on August 1st in Salerno, Italy, at the Aula Magna "Vincenzo Buonocore", University of Salerno.
In line with EUSA’s values, the Opening Ceremony was celebrated “in the name of peace, dialogue, and friendship”, reinforcing the unifying power of sport.

The Ceremony was attended by Vincenzo Loia, Rector of the University of Salerno, Adam Roczek, EUSA President, Fulvio Bonavitacola, Vice-President of the Campania Region, and Lorenzo Lentini, President of CUS Salerno.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, participants were welcomed by Prof. Loia.

EUSA President Adam Roczek welcomed all participants and praised the excellent work done by the University of Salerno, also expressing his excitement for the upcoming competitions and the road to the European Universities Games Salerno 2026.

The competition is organised by CUS Salerno, the official sports centre of the University of Salerno, in collaboration with Adisurc, the University of Salerno, and with the support of the Campania Region, under the patronage of the European University Sports Association.

The university and city have a strong tradition in sports and will host the EUG 2026. This championship is a significant step in raising awareness and preparing for that major event. The event also enjoys strong support from civic and institutional bodies, along with active participation from local communities.

The Championship takes place from August 1st to August 5th in Fisciano, gathering 250 student-athletes and coaches from 33 universities, representing 17 countries.

EUSA is represented by President Roczek, Technical Delegate Jeanine Tijn-A-Sioe, Assistant Technical Delegate Martina Begic, and Sports Director Liam Smith. Before the Opening Ceremony, the General Technical Meeting took place in the Cilento room of the University of Salerno, where the draw of the group stage was carried out.
The Organisation also include referees and officials from the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP Campania), who provided technical and educational support throughout the event.

The competition features 24 men’s teams and 20 women’s teams. The title of European Universities 3x3 Basketball Champion is defended by Vytautas Magnus University (Lithuania) in the men’s competition and Vasyl Stefanyk University (Ukraine) in the women’s competition.

Expectations are high as athletes from across Europe gather to compete at the highest level of university sport, showcasing their athleticism, teamwork, and the values of fair play, friendship, and cultural exchange.

The ceremony was full of energy and pride, with vibrant delegations waving their flags and creating an international and festive atmosphere. The parade of universities drew enthusiastic applause and concluded with the traditional "Gaudeamus Igitur" anthem, together with the raising of the EUSA flag.

Several athletes shared their enthusiasm about the event. Volunteers, many of whom are students from the University of Salerno, expressed their pride in being involved in such an international competition.

Parallel to the sports programme, a series of cultural and entertainment activities are scheduled daily, including DJ sets, live music, fan zones, and local food events highlighting Campania’s culinary heritage, from pizza and Cilentano flatbread to traditional pasta tastings with show cooking and games.

The European Universities 3x3 Basketball Championship 2025 are a preparatory test for the upcoming Games next summer, which will host around 4500 participants from 500+ universities in 12 sports across the Fisciano and Baronissi campuses.

EUSA European Universities 3x3 Basketball Championship Salerno 2025 is counted as a Qualifying Tournament for FISU World University Cup 2025.
