Erzurum hosts EUSA visit

On the occasion of the Turkish Universities Winter Championships, representatives of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) visited Erzurum, Turkiye, to explore the possibilities for hosting future EUSA Winter events.

EUSA Secretary General / CEO Matjaz Pecovnik and Director of Sports Events Liam Smith attended the championships and held a series of meetings with key institutional and regional stakeholders. The visit was hosted by Mutlu Turkmen, President of the Turkish University Sports Federation (TUSF), and Mehmet Yonal, TUSF Secretary General.

During their stay in Erzurum, the EUSA delegation held meetings with key local and academic leaders, including Ahmet Ozdemir, Deputy Governor of Erzurum; Mehmet Sekmen, Metropolitan Mayor of Erzurum; Ahmet Hacımuftuoglu, Rector of Ataturk University; Naim Narkmez, Vice Rector of Erzurum Technical University; and Levent Cakmur, Provincial Director of Youth and Sports.

The discussions focused on the region’s infrastructure, winter sports capacities, and opportunities for strengthening cooperation in the framework of future university winter competitions.

The Turkish Universities Winter Championships featured Alpine Skiing, Snowboard, Snow Volleyball, and several other winter disciplines, welcoming numerous universities from across the country. Competitions were held over multiple days at the renowned Palandoken Ski Center, one of Turkiye’s leading winter sports destinations.

In addition to attending the competitions, EUSA representatives also met with TUSF Board members and university representatives, further reinforcing collaboration and exchanging views on the continued development of university winter sport.
