Dalian 2025 FISU University World Football Cup has started
A vibrant start to the 2025 FISU University World Cup Football as university teams from around the world gathered in Dalian, China, this week, ready to compete, celebrate sport, culture, and unity.
The tournament, running until 28 September, has drawn 23 university teams representing 15 different countries, with 16 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams set to battle for the prestigious title.
The opening ceremony at Suoyuwan Stadium set the tone for the event, drawing more than 21,000 spectators. Combining maritime imagery with traditional and modern Chinese cultural performances, the show highlighted Dalian’s coastal heritage while celebrating the unity of international sport. Student performers from local universities joined in the festivities, creating an atmosphere of both pride and celebration.

On the pitch, the action began immediately. In the women’s tournament, the Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France from France faced off against the University of Sydney in the opening match, marking the start of what promises to be a highly competitive competition. The Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (FRA) earned its place in the tournament by finishing second at last year’s European Universities Games in Debrecen–Miskolc, which served as a qualifying event for this cup.

In the men’s draw, Shanghai University of Sport delighted the home crowd with a commanding 4–0 victory over Spain’s University of Valencia. In the mens competition, 4 European universities are competing: State University of Trade and Economics (UKR), University of Granada (ESP), University of Split (CRO), Ramon Llull University (ESP). The State University of Trade and Economics (UKR) secured qualification by claiming the title at last year’s European Universities Games in Debrecen–Miskolc.

China’s universities have already shown strong performances, with most teams avoiding defeat in their first outings, and local fans are eager to see how far they can go on home soil. Traditional powerhouses such as Beijing Normal University, Paulista University of Brazil, and the University of Split from Croatia will also be teams to watch as the group stage unfolds.
