Counting down to 2025 IDUS and EWOS

One month from today, we will celebrate both the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) and the European Week of Sport (EWOS) in September, two initiatives dedicated to promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Since its establishment in 2016, IDUS has been held annually on 20 September, officially recognised by UNESCO. The day highlights the strong ties between universities and their local communities, with sport, physical activity, and wellbeing at its core.

This global celebration also serves as a platform to exchange knowledge on key issues shaping the future of sport and the University Sports Movement. It raises awareness of the vital role of sport within education, while showcasing the mission of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) programmes, policies, and priorities.

The campaign of the International Day of University Sport has inspired countless activities across all five continents, bringing communities together through sport and physical activity. This year’s milestone edition will continue to build on that global tradition.

Following the IDUS celebrations, attention will turn to the 10th edition of the European Week of Sport (EWoS) and the #BeActive campaign, both launched by the European Commission. As in previous years, EWoS will take place from 23 to 30 September, engaging participants across Europe and beyond.

The European Week of Sport highlights the power of sport to promote tolerance, strengthen a sense of citizenship, and foster social inclusion. By encouraging people of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels to get involved, it addresses key challenges facing European society while showcasing sport’s unifying role.

In 2025, the European Week of Sport will highlight a decade of impact while looking ahead to new challenges. This milestone edition will celebrate ten years of inspiring people to embrace active lifestyles, promote healthier digital habits, and continue motivating everyone to #BeActive.

The Opening Ceremony of the European Week of Sport will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark on 23rd of September, 2025. Last year the 2024 edition of EWOS saw 15 million people participate in more than 50,000 activities organised by sport federations, local clubs, schools, and sport organisations involved in the European Week of Sport.

Sport-lovers and newcomers had the opportunity to participate in various games, matches, hikes, swims, and other initiatives to test themselves and discover what type of physical activity best suits their preferences and lifestyle.

Organised in cooperation with national coordinators and partner organisations, including EUSA as an official partner. The week-long #BeActive campaign takes place each year from 23 to 30 September. Its goal is to make Europe healthier by promoting active living across all sectors of society through a wide variety of activities, demonstrations, and festivals held throughout the continent.

In 2025, EUSA will proudly be engaged in this year’s European Week of Sport (EWoS), celebrating the 10th edition during the European Universities Rowing Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland. In addition, the EUSA Office team will join the movement with a variety of #BeActive activities, extending the celebrations also into October with the Runners4all - European Students’ Run.

We warmly encourage our members and partners to join us in marking both the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) and the European Week of Sport (EWoS). Let's together celebrate the power of sport, promote healthy lifestyles, and inspire even more students and communities across Europe to get active!
