Canoe Sprint: Beginning of a beautiful friendship

Canoe Sprint: Beginning of a beautiful friendship

We spoke a lot about the athletes and some interesting stories about university sport all over Europe, but we are only 14 days to go untill European Universities Games in Coimbra. Now is the time to meet the sports that would be the part of EUG 2018. We start from the sport that we will be present for the first time at EUSA competition - canoe sprint.

Although canoe making history and usage goes a long way, history of the sport is much younger. The name canoe goes a long way and the root in Eskimo language means "Man boat" and they were used all around the world for various purposes. Canoe as a sport originated in England where the Royal canoe club was founded in 1860 by Mr John McGreggor, and the first competition 1871.

Rowing is older and well known brother of canoe sprint and perhaps you did not know that we watch canoe sprint at Olympic Games from 1936, and its first appereance was Paris 1924 as a demonstrative sport.

This years venue in Montemor-o-Velho is well known in the world of Canoe Sprint and University sport because it is often the host of different events, including last edition of FISU World Universities Canoe sprint championship. And, as you already read, Montemor-o-Velho will host first ever EUSA Canoe Sprint event in history.

Disciplines that will be on the program of European Universities Games will be K1, K2 and C1 and the complete history and we hope for a great competition and we are eager to see who will be writen in history of University sport as winners of first ever EUSA Canoe Sprint Championship.
