3 candidate cities for the European Universities Games 2028

EUSA is excited to announce the three host city candidates for the European Universities Games 2028. The bidding for the EUG2028 opened on October 15, 2022 and finished on September 30, 2023. With the bidding officially closed, the final official candidates are Granada (ESP), Manisa (TUR) and Split (CRO).

From now until the announcement of the winning candidate, working meetings with the interested cities will be held, bidding dossier submissions will be made and evaluation visits will be conducted - the latter in early 2024. The chosen city will be decided at April 2024 EUSA Executive Committee Meeting in Aveiro, Portugal.

The programme for the 2028 edition of the European Universities Games should include the following sports:

  • COMPULSORY SPORTS (12) Badminton, Basketball, 3x3 Basketball, Beach Handball, Beach-Volleyball, Football, Futsal, Handball, Rowing, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball
  • COMBAT SPORTS (4) – included all / or organised as separate EUC Combat Sports Judo, Karate, Kickboxing, Taekwondo
  • OPTIONAL SPORTS (11) Chess, Golf, Rugby 7s’, Sports Climbing, Orienteering, Taekwondo, Water Polo, Padel, Swimming

All three candidates offer fantastic opportunities and prospects for the 2028 EUG.

Granada, located in Spain’s Southern Andalusia Region is known for its architectural and artistics monuments. The city is home to EUSA Associated Member University of Granada, who finished in the top 10 universities in the 2022 European Universities Games in terms of participation and number of teams. Granada was a welcoming host to the 2023 European Universities Tennis Championships.

Manisa is located in the Central Aegean region of Western Turkey, known for its location on the slopes of Mount Spill. Manisa is the home of newly associated member Manisa Celal Bayar University. The University has successfully competed with medals in EUSA sports such as Karate, Beach Volleyball and Futsal.

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and the largest city on the Croatian coast. Split has been host to many EUSA Championships in the past; it is host of the International Rowing Regatta Sveti Duje (EUSA Patronage event) and recently held EUSA Executive Committee Meeting in May, 2023 and the EUC Futsal in July, 2023. The city is home to EUSA Associated Member University of Split.

EUSA next European Universities Games will be held in Debrecen-Miskolc (HUN) in July. 2024, with the following edition that has been already assigned to the city of Salerno, Italy for 2026.
