2018 FISU celebrations of IDUS

Lead by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), thousands of university students, institutions, cities and people came together again in celebrating the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) on 20 September, making the 3rd edition of IDUS a resounding success.

Messages and photos from around the world were shared on social media, connecting people and showcasing activities that got citizens moving. The FISU headquarters in Lausanne buzzed with activity too, as renowned Swiss athletes Zoé Cheli and Augustin Maillefer dropped in to have a chat about university sport and IDUS. Ski Cross star Zoé said, “It’s a really cool event for the students, especially to try out some new sport that they can then practice on the campus afterwards.” Two-time Olympian, rower Augustin agreed wholeheartedly. “I study sports science, so I know how important physical activity is. And sports is so much fun anyway, so I think it’s a great event. Have fun!” was his message to all the students out there, celebrating IDUS in their own way.

Proclaimed by UNESCO in 2015 on the initiative of FISU, IDUS is unique platform for the global exchange of ideas and development through university sport. It is all part of FISU’s endeavour to create stronger sporting cultures in universities and encourage physical activity. Taking this core message forward is FISU’s ambitious initiative ‘Healthy Campus’, which is set for a launch in 2019.

“FISU has to take care of the health of all those students who do not participate in competitive sports also,” said FISU Secretary General & CEO, Eric Saintrond.

Lausanne in motion

The third edition of the Lausanne in Motion festival brought a whole host of new and exciting activities to the people of Lausanne to try their hand at, both on and off the glimmering shores of Lake Geneva. Part of the ongoing celebrations of the International Day of University Sport, the event aims to get people moving out of their comfort zones and into the fit zone.

“With this event, we unite people with sport and demonstrate that sport is not only for champions or competitive athletes,” said FISU President Oleg Matytsin in the midst of all the activity. “Sport should be for everyone.” Looking around at the many families and children present the FISU President added, “I see small kids on the climbing wall and many others who are here with their parents and friends. This is the main goal of this project - to unite people, to educate people through sport and help them enjoy sport.”
