1st FISU America Games concluded

The historic first edition of the FISU America Games was held between July 20 and 28 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The event brought together 1400 student athletes from 13 countries from the North and South America to compete in 10 sports: Basketball, Football, Futsal, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Track & Field and Volleyball, including Swimming, Table Tennis and Track & Field as sports for students with disabilities.

Taekwondo as one of the sports

Competitions for most sports have been hosted by the newly-constructed Brazilian Paralympic Center in Sao Paolo, which also hosted the Opening and Closing ceremonies. The athletes were welcomed on July 20 by FISU President Mr Oleg Matytsin, Brazilian University Sport Association (CBDU) President and FISU Vice President Mr Luciano Cabral, President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee Mr Paulo Wanderley and President of FISU America Mr Alim Maluf Neto.

Basketball at the FISU America's Games

The United States gold in men’s football and basketball, and that of Brazil in women’s football, were the last awards that preceded the closing ceremony. Brazil claimed most medals and at the Closing, the authorities of the Organizing Committee, FISU America and the Brazilian Confederation of University Sports (CBDU) appreciated the great presence in São Paulo and looked forward to another great edition in 2020.

Closing event

The inaugural FISU America Games were the continental association’s first multi-sport games and left an important mark, both as an elite continental sporting event and on the governance level to enhance the role university sport plays in society.
