Rijeka 20116th European Universities Handball Championship

Rijeka, Croatia: July 17-24, 2011


6th European Universities Handball Championship was held between July 17 and 24, 2011 in Rijeka, Croatia, hosting 16 men and 11 women university teams from all over Europe.

Opening ceremony

The ceremony began with the march of all the athletes proceeded with Croatian national anthem and greeting speeches from Mr Zrinko Custonja, President of Croatian University Sports Federation; Mr Česlovas Garbaliauskas, EUSA EC member; Prof. Dr. Sc. Pero Lučin Rector of Univeristy of Rijeka; Prof. Dr. Sc. Vidoje Vujić, Deputy County Perfect of Primorsko Goranska County, Mr Vojko Obersnel, City of Rijeka Mayor; and Dr. Sc. Radovan Fuchs from the Ministry of Science, education and sports who also opened the championship.

Opening of the event

The Oath of the athletes was followed by the Oath of the judges and referees and the program continued with performances of dance groups Flame and Rijeka’s first Cheerleader Squad.

Apart from the organising committee and the dedicated team of volunteers, EUSA representative Mr Garbaliauskas and EUSA technical delegates Mr Frantisek Taborsky and Mr Pascal Denoyer were making sure the championship was organised on the highest level.

The event was also visited by the President of the Republic of Croatia Mr Ivo Josipović, meeting the representatives of the organising committee, along with the representatives of the Rijeka university Sports Association, University of Rijeka and the City of Rijeka. The President then also met with the volunteers at the championship. The President attended the women's match between the State University of Trade and Economics from Russia and the University of Zagreb from Croatia. The second half was announced by throwing the ball by Mr Josipović.

The championship concluded by the finals and the Closing Ceremony at Sport hall Zamet in Rijeka on July 24, 2011.

In men finals, the title of champion/s went to University of Minho (Portugal) who have won a thrilling final match against University of Rijeka (Croatia).

In women finals, the title of champion/s went to Rostov Institute Russian State University of Trade and Economics (Russia) who have won an exciting final match against University of Rijeka (Croatia).

Medals and awards were presented by Mr Pero Lucin, Rector of the University of Rijeka; Mr Zeljko Jovanovic, deputy Mayor of the City of Rijeka; Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, EUSA EC Member and Mr Ingo Kamenar, President of the Primorsko-Goranska county Council.

The trophy and medals for the best team was given to University of Minho. Award was presented by Mr Pero Lucin, Rector of the University of Rijeka. The awards was given by Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, EUSA EC member and Mr Ingo Kamenar, President of the Primorsko-goranska county Council for the best goalkeeper to Davor Brajnovic (University of Rijeka), for the best scorer to Alejandro Rubijales Vallejo (University of Malaga) and for the MVP of the EUCH 2011 to Lorenzo Rui (University of Minho).

The awards were given by Mr Ceslovas Garbaliauskas, EUSA EC member and Mr Ingo Kamenar, President of the Primorsko-goranska county Council for the best goalkeeper to Sanja Golubic (University of Zagreb), for the best scorer to Perihan Topaloglu (Kastamonu University) and for the MVP of the EUCH 2011 to Marina Yartseva (Rostov Institute Russian State University of Trade and Economics).

Matches

The EUSA flag was passed to the representative of the Spanish team as the next Handball event will take place in Cordoba (Spain) from July 9th to 24th 2012 where the European Universities teams are welcome to attend.
