EUG 2028 Evaluation Visit in Granada

From March 20-22, 2024, Spanish City Granada, welcomed the European Universities Games 2028 Evaluation Commission. 

The EUSA Evaluation Commission consisted of Ms Ivana Ertlova, Vice-President, Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, Secretary General, and Mr Francis Cirianni, Treasurer.

EUSA representatives were firstly welcomed by the Rector of University of Granada Mr Pedro Mercado Pacheco together with Director of University of Granada Mr Miguel Ángel Guardia López, Secretary General of the University of Granada Ms María del Carmen García Garnica, Vice-Rector for Student Services and Campus Life Mr Benitez Juan Luis, Director of the Sports Centre of the University of Granada Mr Jordi Joan Mercadé Torrás and other important associates of the university.

The Rector of University of Granada stressed the full support of the university in organisation of the European Universities Games 2028. The Games are being one of the important events in celebration of the 500th Anniversary of University of Granada.  

Following the Rectorate visit, the Evaluation Committee visited several sport venues in the "Paseíllos Universitarios", before visiting Granada's renowned treasure, the Alhambra.

EUSA was welcomed by the Director of the Alhambra and Generalife Trust, Mr Rodrigo Ruiz-Jiménez Carrera. Afterwards, a press conference was held in Alhambra, gathering all the important representatives of the bidding city partners to the press and media.

The Rector of University of Granada Mr Pedro Mercado Pacheco, Mayoress of the Granada City Council Ms María Francisca Carazo Villalonga, General Secretary for Universities of the Regional Government of Andalusia Mr Ramón Herrera de las Heras, Managing Director of the Spanish Supreme Council for Sports  Mr Fernando Molinero Revert, Director General for Sport Systems and Values of the Andalusian Regional Government Ms María de Nova Pozuelo, Subdelegate of the Spanish Government in Granada Mr José Antonio Montilla Martos and Delegate of the Government of Regional Government of Andalusia in Granada Mr Antonio Jesús Granados García, all expressed their full commitment and support to the Candidacy of Granada to host the European Universities Games 2028.

The media was also addressed by Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, EUSA Secretary General who thanked all the hosts for their hospitality, commitment, and support in preparation of the candidacy.

Afterwards, the EUSA Evaluation Commission met with volunteers and attended the presentation of the bid.

The presentation was given by Director of the Sports Centre of the University of Granada, Mr Jordi Joan Mercadé Torrás and the City Councillor for Mobility, Citizen Protection, Urban Agenda and Sustainability, Ms Ana Isabel Agudo Martínez. 

The meeting was followed by a Guided Tour of the Alhambra and a private meeting with the Governmental and Regional Authorities.

The visit finished with the EUSA Delegation attending the Closing and Awards Ceremony of the Andalusian University Championships 2024, organised by the University of Granada for over 2500 participants.

The decision of the EUSA Executive Committee on the host of the European Universities Games will be taken at the Executive Committee Meeting in Aveiro, Portugal in April 2024.

The EUSA board will choose the host city among the three candidates:  Split, Manisa and Granada.
